Bike train rides again Tour Niagara by bike…arrive by train

(NC)-Your trip begins at Toronto's Union Station as you line up to board the VIA passenger car with your trusted mountain bike in toe. Mountain bike? You mean laptop or duffle bag, no?

Not on this train. This is the Toronto-Niagara Bike Train and you and 55 other cycling enthusiasts are on a unique and sustainable train ride to discover the Niagara Region's renowned tourism and cycling opportunities.

Building on last summer's successful pilot program which saw dozens of cyclists and their bikes riding the train between Toronto and Niagara Falls on each of four weekends, the Toronto-Niagara Bike Train will be returning this year with an expanded schedule.

The transportation initiative which introduced bike racks onboard select VIA Rail departures between Toronto and Niagara Falls was so popular with avid cyclists the 2008 edition promises more travel options, and some getaway package deals that spans eight weekends from late June through the end of September. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the additional September trips thanks to events like the Niagara Wine Festival.

"With its vast network of recreational trails, bike lanes and country roads, the Niagara Region offers cyclists an amazing diversity of landscapes, an extensive trail network, historic towns, renowned wineries, the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and, of course, the falls," said Malcolm Andrews, Senior Manager, Corporate communications for VIA Rail.

The price for a round-trip on the Bike Train between Toronto and Niagara Falls is $59 including taxes and bike rack reservation fees. Weekend getaway and daytrip packages will include options such as accommodations, restaurants, winery tours and tastings, guided bike tours, theatre tickets, parks and attraction passes.
