Breakfast on the go-go

Provided By:

(NC)-With today's hectic pace, many people tend to skip breakfast. Because of this, they have a harder time fitting important nutrients into their diet and may experience increased hunger throughout the day, leading to weight gain over time. Many foods eaten at breakfast contain notable amounts of vitamins C & D, calcium, iron and fibre - essential for health.

A 'good morning meal' should contain a mixture of the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat) and provide approximately one-quarter of your daily nutritional requirements. Consider whole grain cereals or bread products, fruit or fruit juice, lower fat dairy products like milk and yogurt, or eggs. An egg is an excellent source of protein. Research has shown eggs maintain satiety, decreasing appetite throughout the day.

Eating on the go is a challenge. If you have time to pack something the night before, carry easy-to-eat whole grain cereal, yogurt, a small box of low-fat milk or juice, and include some fruit. When you don't have time to prepare or pack breakfast, consider a fast food restaurant that offers a variety of choice so that you have options that fit your taste and lifestyle.

"If you are crunched for time and need to grab something on the go, consider a fast food restaurant that offers a variety of choice like McDonald's. The Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich with a coffee and small orange juice offers 2.5 servings of fruit, 2 servings of grain products, 1/4 serving of milk and alternatives, and 2/3 of a serving of meat and alternatives per Canada's Food Guide", says Dr. Tanya MacLaurin, registered dietitian and associate professor at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph. "This example provides a mixture of the macronutrients, foods from three of the four food groups from Canada's Food Guide, and provides a source of 'complete protein' from the egg in the Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich."

By eating breakfast, you refuel your body with energy to help start the day and keep you going during the day. Science has proven that eating breakfast improves concentration and productivity, mental performance, memory and even your mood.
