Because of this, they have a harder time fitting important nutrients into their diet and may experience increased hunger throughout the day, leading to weight gain over time. Many foods eaten at breakfast contain notable amounts of vitamins C & D, calcium, iron and fibre - essential for health.

A 'good morning meal' should contain a mixture of the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat) and provide approximately one-quarter of your daily nutritional requirements. Consider whole grain cereals or bread products, fruit or fruit juice, lower fat dairy products like milk and yogurt, or eggs. An egg is an excellent source of protein. Research has shown eggs maintain satiety, decreasing appetite throughout the day.

Eating on the go is a challenge. If you have time to pack something the night before, carry easy-to-eat whole grain cereal, yogurt, a small box of low-fat milk or juice, and include some fruit. When you don't have time to prepare or pack breakfast, consider a fast food restaurant that offers a variety of choice so that you have options that fit your taste and lifestyle.
