"Call for the Cure" breast cancer crusade
Avon aims to raise $2 million with 1-900-561-PINK
(NC)-Over the last few years women have used 1-900 numbers to select their favorite singers, their favorite products, favorite dates and now, thanks to a revolutionary new concept in charity fund raising, their favorite charity.
Beginning in October, Avon Canada will be turning to its massive sales force of 65,000 Independent Sales Representatives to spread the word about its first-ever 'Call for the Cure' Campaign, the most grassroots-focused breast cancer awareness campaign ever launched by Avon.
Representatives will rally for the cause by asking their customers, friends and family to call 1-900-561-PINK which, when called, will automatically add $2 to their phone bill as a donation to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade (www.avoncrusade.ca). Cell phone customers with Bell Mobility can call # PINK (7465). Avon is the largest corporate donator to breast cancer research in the world.
"We're using our incredible ability to reach women in every corner of Canada," says Chris Stevens, President, Avon Canada. "Our goal is to raise $2 million by the end of December and let those touched by breast cancer know that they are not alone." The funds raised by 'Call for the Cure' will help support the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA), which funds research projects led by some of Canada's top scientists in the field.
Avon Independent Representatives will be raising awareness across Canada primarily through word-of-mouth and community-based activities such as mini-walks. "Fighting breast cancer can be as easy as picking up the phone - and then asking a friend to do the same," says Roberta Lacey, Director of Communications, Avon Canada. "Canadians impacted directly or indirectly by breast cancer should know that Avon will ensure that every Toonie counts!"
Aligning this campaign with the CBCRA will make a big difference in the lives of people with breast cancer. "CBCRA-funded research makes a significant impact on the information we have about this complex disease," says Nicola Lewis, Executive Director, CBCRA. "In fact, 49 per cent of the scientific articles published by CBCRA grantees have been published in peer-reviewed journals that rank within the TOP 5 per cent worldwide. The commitment of our CBCRA members, such as Avon, allows us to continue vital research to find ways to prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance the quality of life for those living with this disease."
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it.
The good news is breast cancer death rates have declined in all ages combined and in every age group since at least the mid 1990s. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer have declined since 1969 in women aged 20-39.
Since the Breast Cancer Crusade was first launched 15 years ago, Canadian Avon Independent Sales Representatives have voluntarily raised more than $15 million for Breast Cancer Research through the sale of pink ribbon products. Worldwide, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has raised and awarded more than $525 million in 50 countries for awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; access to treatment; support services; and scientific research.
