How important is a Distributed Database Management System in Handling Distributed Database?

Author: Akhila Choudhary

Distributed database is a set of multiple, logically organized or interrelated databases dispersed over a computer network. A Distributed database management system or DDBMS is a centralized software system that allows the management of this distributed database. DDBMS, in its process of managing distributed database, makes the distribution transparent to website development services.

Distributed database management systems are also architected as client-server systems or peer-to-peer ones. In client-server systems, more than one server manages the database and monitor user queries passed on by the clients. The same goes for peer-to-peer systems, where each system has equal functionality for processing, thus making custom web development very easy.

Distributed database are becoming very common in a data system. High volumes of data need to be processed and many users may be accessing the data system simultaneously. With the help of network protocols, the data flows freely over any network combination and facilitate seamless web page development.

But, a distributed database is very fragmented as it might be stored in different systems, so there must be a way to the give the end-user a feeling that he is accessing data from a single logical system. Also, the flow of data from the server to the client and client to server can pose security threats to users and websites development companies. This is because many hackers easily steal confidential information.

A DDBMS addresses this problem and manages the data as well as maintains confidentiality of the database and handles data integrity. It sits in a centralized application and maintains the database as if it were logically stored in one computer. DDBMS constantly synchronizes data and ensures that any deletion or update is executed in a correct way.

DDBMS also manages the difference or disparity of database, since various computer servers handle different database. Thus, the different types of data implementations like relational, hierarchical, object oriented and XML data stores are all under distributed database management system.
