Energy crisis hits Canadians where it hurts most: the bedroom

(NC)-You don't need to head to the nearest amusement park to catch the latest ride. Day-after-day, Canadians are finding themselves face-to-face with a ride of their own: the energy roller coaster.

According to recent research by The Better Sleep Council Canada, our energy levels greatly fluctuate throughout the day with 37 per cent of Canadians saying they're the most energetic between 6 and 9 a.m., then seeing energy levels tumble to the bottom of the charts between 6 and 3 p.m. before rising up again in the evening. As a result, people often doze off during the day or in the evening to catch a few quick Z's.

"Cat-naps may sound like a first-rate idea when your energy levels are spiraling downward, but consistency in the bedroom is key to a better sleep," says Gary Baskerville of the Better Sleep Council Canada. "Getting a good quality sleep is vital in order to function well during the day and smooth out those energy peaks and valleys."

The Better Sleep Council offers the following tips to help Canadians get a good night's sleep:

• Maintain your natural body rhythm by going to bed and waking up around the same time every day - even on the weekends

• Recognize when you're at your best and when you need a break during the day. If you crash in the afternoon, take a short walk - late day naps can interfere with nightly sleep

• Avoid too much caffeine to artificially boost your energy levels during the day and night

• For a restful sleep, avoid heavy meals and finish eating at least two hours before bedtime.

• Check your mattress regularly to make sure it's providing you with the support you need every night. The average mattress provides comfort and support for eight-to-ten years of nightly use
