Environment Initiatives Halifax NS
mid sackville, NS
(NC)-As the weather gets warmer and people want to spend more time outside, it's easy to be inspired to do something to help the environment. But often people don't know where to start. The first step is to pay attention to the issues. Do some research about your community's environmental concerns and find a way to help. Here are a few ideas to get you going:
• Find out which animal habitats are endangered or which species are threatened in your area. Get involved in efforts to protect and improve the situations for these animals at risk. And while you're at it, make sure to enter the Canon Canada Nurture Nature Awards at www.canon.ca/donations_sponsorships for the opportunity to win $20,000 to fund your environmental initiative. Submissions will be accepted starting from Earth Hour (www.earthhour.org) on March 28, 2009 until September 1st, 2009.
• Are landfill constraints an issue in your area? Reduce, reuse and recycle all at once by hosting a community yard sale. Purge your home of things you no longer need-which might be treasures for some bargain hunters-and take any leftovers to Goodwill.
• Water conservation may also be a concern. It's easy to encourage friends and neighbours to be part of a water-conscious community. Promote water conservation in community newsletters, on bulletin boards and by example. You can also look for a community water conservation group or join in programs to reclaim local wetlands or maintain area streams and lakes.
