(NC)-For most Canadians, the arrival of warmer weather marks the shedding of winter coats and the dusting off of running shoes. For those that suffer from inflammation, however, the thought of putting those aching joints to work may make you want to go back into hibernation.

Many people don't know that they can help fight the redness of joints with the redness of tart cherries. While it may seem an unlikely source, tart cherries are a refreshing, natural way to help combat pain and encourage a healthy diet. Research conducted at Michigan State University found that tart cherries are a rich source of antioxidants and anthocynanins that can be beneficial for managing and preventing inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and Type 2 diabetes.

Studies show that practicing a balanced lifestyle can help reduce the level of pain associated with inflammation, a condition that can lead to arthritis, pulmonary diseases, cancer and Alzheimer's. Joint pain can be stifled by managing your weight through exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.

"It's important for those who suffer from joint pain to not only stay active, but to also be conscious of the food they eat," says registered dietitian Lisa Weinberg. "Tart cherries, either juice or dried, provide an excellent source of nutrients and have properties that could help alleviate pain associated with inflammatory diseases."

Studies show that muscle tissue starts to waste away after only three to six days of inactivity, followed by a loss of strength and flexibility - both of which can lead to more pain.

By keeping active you are feeding your joints. It may be difficult for those suffering from joint inflammation to participate in physical activities, but it is important to enjoy exercise every day to help minimize pain overall.
