Excess weight can increase your chances of developing osteoarthritis, the most prevalent form of arthritis in Canada.

There are ways to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. Implementing 30 minutes of moderately intense physical activity, such as swimming, walking or stretching, three times a week is the most important defense. In making this effort, you can take steps toward a healthier lifestyle, while decreasing the impact of osteoarthritis.

Steven McNair, the President and CEO of The Arthritis Society, says, "Our goal is to encourage Canadians to take an active role in managing their health. The Arthritis Society's Lifestyle Makeover Challenge is a program that provides people with resources and motivation to get started. Canadians need to know that it is possible to fight arthritis."

The Arthritis Society's Lifestyle Makeover Challenge has already supported thousands of Canadians to make lifestyle changes that enable them to manage or delay the onset of arthritis. The Challenge begins as a four-week program that encourages Canadians to become more active and eat healthier. The approach also addresses, through exercise and stretching, how to reduce the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis.

"We support the efforts of our partners, such as The Arthritis Society, in helping Canadians realize more active, healthier lives," says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION, Canada's voice and champion for physical activity and sport participation. "It's never too late to make physical activity a part of one's life. Start moving more and reap the benefits!"

Canadians who wish to take on the Challenge can sign up at www.arthritis.ca/lifestyle. Registrants receive a welcome kit that includes a waist tape measure, a contract, an activity tracker, a list of exercises, and a nutrition and arthritis brochure.
