High-Efficiency Washing Machines
Eco-Consumer Quick Tip
By Diana Robinson
(NC)-Recently, a new designation has been showing up on laundry detergent bottles: HE. A national survey conducted by Angus Reid Strategies on behalf of Purex Natural Elements laundry detergent found that 62 per cent of Canadians have never heard of HE and don't understand what this designation means.
HE stands for high-efficiency and refers to the new front-load, high-efficiency washing machines that are becoming more popular with consumers. These machines not only use less energy than traditional machines, they use less water, and therefore, require a laundry detergent that is low-sudsing. The presence of too many suds can "confuse" the washing cycles and restrict the proper rinsing of the clothes, and may lead to mechanical difficulties with the machine.
If you own a front-load, high-efficiency washing machine you should only be using HE detergents, as per the manufacturer's instructions. Purex Natural Elements has just launched a new HE formula that is ideal for high-efficiency machines and offers the same environmental and cleaning benefits as all Purex Natural Elements products; it's made with naturally sourced cleaning ingredients, is biodegradable in 28 days and is phosphate free.
