Pre Menstrual Syndrome 62 - Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Conventional Treatment - Progestogen

Author: Kyle J. Norton

Pre-menstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how progestogens effects women with PMS.

I. How Conventional Treatment - Progestogens effects women with PMS

Progestogens are synthetic progesterone used in contraceptive pill which helps to reduce symptoms for women with PMS by inhibiting ovulation and making the mucus of the cervix hostile to sperm thereby preventing conception. There are 2 types of progestogens

1. Analogues of progesterone

2. Analogues of testosterone

II. Side effects

1. Sexual libido

Intake of progestogens in artificial controlling the menstrual cycle to ease symptoms of PMS inhibits either progesterone or testosterone causing hormone imbalance between estrogen, progesterone and testosterone resulting in sexual libido for women.

2. Weight gain and water retention

Progestogens inhibit the levels of potassium causing the unbalance between potassium and salt, that interferes with lymphatic function in regulating the fluid in the body's tissue resulting in water retention and weigh gain.

3. Irregular menstrual cycle

Research found that women intake with progestogens may be experience irregular menstrual cycle such as prolong bleeding, excessive bleeding, no cycle for months at a time, very painful periods, because the medicine inhibits the levels of progestogen causing imbalance between estrogen and progesterone resulting in irregular menstrual cycle.

4. Depression

The hormone imbalance caused by higher levels of progesterone in the body will inference with the normal function of nervous system in hormone secretion resulting in over production of serotonin and adrenaline leading to depression and anxiety.

5. Insomnia

Intake of progestogens may increase the risk of sleeplessness, because of progestogens inhibits the levels of progesterone and testosterone resulting in nervous tension and disrupting the normal production of melatonin hormone.

6. Other symptoms of PMS

Study show that progestogens relieve some symptoms of PMS but cause others.
