Investing in Your Local Environment
(NC)-Do you want to make a difference to the environment in your community? Local initiatives such as shoreline cleanups, land revitalization projects and wildlife conservation programs help the environment in your own backyard. If you're unable to donate your time, an easy way to show your support is by making a donation to an environmental charity, even if it's only a few dollars a month.
To stretch your donation dollars, consider supporting a charity such as the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF), a national organization with a grassroots focus that provides funding for local environment and wildlife projects.
"One hundred per cent of every dollar that Canadians donate to TD FEF goes to support projects in the community where the donation was made," says Mary Desjardins, Executive Director, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. "TD Bank Financial Group assumes the management costs for TD FEF and matches donations up to $1 million annually."
Donors can set up regular monthly contributions for as little as $2 per month or make a one-time donation.
In 2008, TD FEF provided more than $3 million in support of over 800 projects across the country. As a result, several chapters reached milestones:
• The Ottawa TD FEF Chapter celebrated a milestone of funding 500 projects. Projects funded in Ottawa include a donation to the Ottawa-Carleton Wildlife Centre and Rideau Valley Conservation Authority;
• The Nanaimo TD FEF Chapter celebrated dispersing $500,000 in funds since 1990 by supporting organizations including the Alberni Valley Enhancement Society;
• The Halifax TD FEF Chapter celebrated funding 240 projects through donations to the Sackville Rivers Association.
