Meals & Menus: Planning is key to balanced meals

Provided By:

(NC)-Back-to-school routines add a whole new set of tasks and challenges to our busy lives - and one of them is ensuring that each family member gets balanced meals.

Eating well with Canada's Food Guide recommends that our meal planning includes ample servings from the four major food groups, which are: Vegetables and Fruit; Grain Products; Milk and Alternatives; and Meat and Alternatives. If you have questions on making healthier food choices, make a toll-free call and speak to a registered dietitian personally. The Eat Right Ontario call centre can be reached at 1-877-510-510-2, Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., ET. The companion website, EatRightOntario.ca also offers trustworthy nutrition and information on disease prevention free-of-charge to all Ontario residents.

Food specialists tell us that meal planning doesn't have to take a lot of time - and good planning also saves money if you eat out less and take advantage of product sales and coupon specials.

Here are a few more helpful tips on this subject:

• Write out your weekly menu before you start making a shopping list. Planning just once or twice a week really saves time.

• Shop by stocking up on nutritious basics like vegetables and fruit, whole grain bread and pasta, brown rice, milk, yogurt, cheese, lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Variety is the key to good nutrition and if they're on hand, you'll be more likely to use them.

• Include the entire family in meal planning. Each family has their own budget requirements, dietary concerns and likes and dislikes. Include children and be sure to cook foods they like and gradually add new ingredients to your recipes to increase variety. By participating, children will appreciate the meal more and learn important life skills. You may even end up with a capable cook by your side.
