(NC)-With summer on the way and post-secondary schools emptying out, many businesses are bulking up their seasonal workforce with eager, affordable student workers.

For students, it's an opportunity to earn some much-needed cash while school's out. But for employers, this seasonal workforce can bring extra headaches - from new payroll to calculate to T4s to records of employment to time and attendance tracking.

"Student workers may provide temporary, reasonably priced help, but in the eyes of the Revenue Canada Agency they're just as much employees as CEOs, so employers need to stay compliant or risk fines," said Angela Haier, vice president of Small Business Solutions at ADP Canada. "If you let your paperwork slide during the summer, come fall you could be in for a bureaucratic headache."

ADP Canada specializes in handling services such as payroll, HR administration and time and attendance management, and offers the following tips to help employers handle the paperwork for summer students:

Don't forget the basics.

Whether you're hiring permanent or temporary staff, the process is the same. Fill out Federal and Provincial TD1 forms and capture the student's Social Insurance Number for future tax forms. If your employees are 18 or older, they must contribute to the Canada Pension Plan.

Get an alternate mailing address.

Students often move between school years, and you need to know where those students will be in February when you'll be mailing T4 statements. Ask for backup contact details like a family address.

Check the rules about vacation pay.

In most provinces employers do not have to give students vacation time, but they may be entitled to vacation pay. Make sure you meet the legislative requirements in your province.
