Raising Eco-Conscious Children
(NC)-Teaching your child to respect others builds good character and helps them grow into a well adjusted adult. Equally important is teaching your child to respect the environment. After all, your child and their children will inherit the earth that is left for them. Teach them well now and they'll take those lessons with them into adulthood.
Here are a few ways to raise an environmentally friendly child:
Foster an appreciation for nature. Take walks or bike rides with your child through safe, environmentally protected areas. There, they'll be able to appreciate undisturbed ecosystems with crickets, birds, vegetation and more.
Give them a global perspective. Share with kids the idea of becoming defenders of the planet. This message has a 'superhero' feel to it that children can relate to and will empower them to make a difference. Charities like Christian Children's Fund of Canada, a child-centred international development organization, offers an inexpensive and educational way for you and your child to impact the environment by helping plant a garden or provide clean drinking water for a community living in extreme poverty in Africa or South America. www.ccfcanada.ca shows ways your child can make a difference around the globe.
Lead by example. This may not be a newsflash, but it's often forgotten that children naturally do what they see their parents doing. So never litter and always try to recycle. The best teaching is done by showing; not lecturing.
