Utah Scientific introduced the UTAH-400/XL, the company's first router to offer a 1056 x 1056 matrix within a single rack unit with BNC connectors. The company's goal in developing the router was to provide a single platform for all digital router applications requiring extremely large matrix configurations.

The UTAH-400/XL is scalable from 288 x 288 to 1056 x 1056 and beyond, with the use of additional matrixes. The router also offers reductions in the physical space and power consumption requirements of most large routing systems; the UTAH-400/XL can be placed in the 1056 x 1056 matrix within 40 RUs, without the need for special cable/connector arrangements.

Another feature of the router's architecture is that each crosspoint card has 576 inputs and 288 outputs, for additional internal signal paths that can be used for a number of purposes.
