Sun Protection DNA test provides genetic insight to protect and restore your skin

The newest findings in genome research indicates that even those of us with dark hair and dark skin, who rarely burn, could also have a predisposition for the serious consequences of too much sun.

In human DNA, there are specific genetic variants that indicate a potential elevated risk for non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer, researchers say. The molecular foundation of skin damage from UV rays is now clear-giving scientists what they need to design accurate and individualized treatments to protect and restore skin.

In fact, Canadians can now take the initiative to get a DNA test done. Currently at drug stores (and in dermatology offices later in the year) an innovative, two-step system called dermaDNA is the only assessment of its kind to measure existing DNA damage in skin cells. It also provides a true evaluation of your genetic UV risk.

"This is a technology that can potentially re-classify how skin cancer risk is assessed," says dermatologist, Dr. Charles Lynde. "Being able, for the first time, to test a patient's current level of skin damage at a molecular level is a compelling argument to get patients to finally use sun protection, treat their skin and to practice safe sun habits."

The assessment test is simple. It involves taking a nose and inner cheek swab that can be done at home and mailed to a laboratory for evaluation. By tracking the MCIR gene-now thought to be the most accurate way to assess the genetic UV risk factor and susceptibility to skin cancer-the lab reviews your sample swabs to determine the actual state of your skin's health plus its genetic profile. Based on the results of the test, the second step is to use one or more highly advanced skin care treatments to reverse, restore, and prevent damage in the future.

A recent clinical study conducted by an independent lab, demonstrated that the dermaDNA skincare line (by Dermaglow) has shown to decrease the level of skin cell damage by seven times over four weeks. With the Cellular Repair treatment for example, results indicate 73% increased protection against cellular, ultraviolet damage-and after 24 hours, a 28% reduction in damaged DNA.

Angela, a 53-year-old Ontario participant of Italian decent received her dermaDNA results that included a high level of DNA damage and a 2x elevated genetic risk to damage from UV exposure. She was surprised with her results: "I have never really worried about using sunscreens-but now I realize that I need to use them because of my elevated genetic risk. And equally important, I would really like to have my children and grandchildren tested so that my family becomes more aware of the damaging effects of the sun."
