(NC)- When it comes to barbecue features and accessories, tongs are tops and side burners and a searing zone are gaining in popularity.

The 18th annual Weber Canadian GrillWatch Survey, conducted in September 2007 by Toronto-based Leger Marketing on behalf of Weber-Stephen Products Co. probes the habits, knowledge and performance of Canadian barbecuers. More than 1,000 consumers nationwide aged 19 and over participated in the online survey.

Grilling gadgets and accessories: (73%) of respondents report that they pick up tongs in preference to any other accessory when grilling. The next three most selected grilling gadgets are the basting brush and spatula (37%), and the grill brush (28%). Honourable mentions included a skewer set, rotisserie, meat thermometer, barbecue mitts, and a vegetable basket.

To Sear or Not to Sear: The searing zone feature now available with many new models of outdoor barbecues, has definitely captured the interest of Canadian grillers. Three out of four are "somewhat interested to very interested" in having this capability on their next barbecue. Currently, one per cent (1%) already own a grill with this feature.

Canadians Like it on the Side: The ideal barbecue must have a side burner (44%)-a significant change from previous surveys which showed that most grill owners with side burners were not using them very often.

Other Must-Have Features: (46%) of respondents want more than two primary burners on their grill, a rotisserie (44%), a back burner (29%), and a smoker box (10%).
