Plastic Surgery Target

A recent study is describing a new type of plastic surgery that removes bumps and bulges caused by back fat.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is using a back lift procedure on women to eliminate the rolls and bulges in the upper to mid back, and hiding the scar under the bra line.

The report analyzed the treatment of only seven women, although authors of the study have performed the back lift on 20 patients so far. The study found minimal complications with the surgery, which takes about an hour, and about two weeks after surgery, patients were allowed to increase their activity levels based on their discomfort. -- ASPS

Why do we snack on foods we know are unhealthy?

People who are asked whether they would choose between a "good" snack and a "bad" snack might not follow their intentions when the snacks arrive. Dutch researchers have found that there is a substantial inconsistency between healthful snack choice intentions and actual behavior.

Participants were asked about their intentions in choosing among four snacks: an apple, a banana, a candy bar and a molasses waffle. About half of the participants indicated they would choose the apple or banana — a "healthy" snack. But when presented, one week later, with the actual snacks, 27 percent switched to the candy bar or waffle.

Although intentions are often tightly linked to what people really do, it doesn't always work that way. One explanation is that intentions are usually under cognitive control while actual choices are often made impulsively, even unconsciously. -- Wageningen University, The Netherlands

Health Tip

Air pollution inside the home can be five times higher than outdoor pollution, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to health problems ranging from respiratory disorders to chronic fatigue.

Fortunately, you don't need to replace your house's entire HVAC system to improve air quality. Several simple and small steps can help your family breathe easier in your home.

- Get the damp out: Use a dehumidifier and be sure to empty its water tray frequently. Install and use vent fans in areas where moisture is generated, like the bathroom and kitchen.

- See the light: Petroleum-based paraffin candles release 11 toxins and two known human carcinogens when burned. Instead, try eco-friendly candles made of vegetable-based soy wax, which burn cleaner.

- Can the chemicals: Much of the contaminants found inside homes are things people put into the air themselves, from cleaning solutions and air fresheners to cigarette smoke and perfumes. Reducing the amount of chemicals you use inside your house can help improve overall air quality.

Number to Know: 27 percent

The number of children around the world who die before the age of 5 has declined by 27 percent over the last two decades -- U.N. Children's Fund

Children’s Health
Vaccination against chickenpox has dramatically reduced the number of children who are infected, hospitalized and killed by the virus each year in the United States, according to a new analysis.

After implementation of the chickenpox vaccination program in 1995, incidence of the illness declined 90 percent by 2005. The number of chickenpox-related hospitalizations declined 75 percent to 88 percent.

Deaths declined by more than 74 percent in people younger than 50, with the greatest declines among children ages 1 to 4 years (92 percent) and 5 to 9 years (89 percent). -- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Senior Health

A new study from the United Kingdom has concluded that older people could make better use of computers if icons, links and menu headings automatically grew bigger as the cursor moves towards them.

Researchers said “expanding targets” could reduce mistakes during mouse use and decrease the amount of time it takes to click a target.

The changes to software can lead to a greater number of older people shopping and communicating online and accessing web-based information about health-care services, for instance. It could boost their quality of life and enable continued independent living, especially if their ability to travel declines. -- University of Reading

Fall Safety

As the leaves turn different colors and the weather becomes cooler, many Americans begin to engage in outdoor cleanup. Over the next few weeks, we’ll offer some tips on how to stay injury-free this fall.

To prevent injury from raking, be sure to:

- Warm up for at least 10 minutes with some stretching and light exercise.

- Use a rake that is comfortable for your height and strength. Wear gloves or use rakes with padded handles to prevent blisters.

- Vary your movement, alternating your leg and arm positions often. When picking up leaves, bend at the knees, not the waist.

- Wear shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles; wet leaves can be slippery.

- Do not overfill leaf bags, especially if the leaves are wet. And never throw leaves over your shoulder or to the side. The twisting motion required to do so places undue stress on your back.

Popular Types of Plastic Surgery

Author: Paul McIndoe

No longer restricted to only the rich and famous, more and more everyday men and women are opting for plastic surgery to change and improve a certain part of their body. Regardless of the treatment you are considering, preparing yourself for recovery and taking the time to rest and relax post-surgery makes a world of difference when it comes to recuperation.

Breast augmentation is a popular type of surgery for females which involves enlarging or reducing your breast size, or simply having an uplift to perk things up a little.

Small breasts can be a source of concern or embarrassment for women across the globe and breast enlargement surgery is one way to help improve confidence and emphasise the feeling of feminity. Equally, women with overly large breasts often feel that their lives are restricted both physically and emotionally. Large breasts can also be a source of physical discomfort, causing back and breast pain and often leading to bad posture.

A breast uplift does as the name suggests and is used to raise and firm the bust. This can prove the ideal type of surgery for women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts, but would welcome an uplift to combat the effects of gravity.

When it comes to breast augmentation, the experts advise that women should wait until they’re eighteen years old before proceeding with surgery. The body has not fully developed before this age and if a female’s body is still growing at the time of surgery, the results can look very different just a few months later.

Liposuction is another popular procedure which is widely used to improve body shape by removing unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. A tummy tuck is commonly performed at the same time as liposuction to the waist area and works by tightening the stomach muscles and removing excess skin.

Last but not least a facelift is an increasingly common procedure that removes the saggy skin associated with ageing. As time goes by, everyone’s skin begins to lose elasticity and this can result in excess folds of skin on the face and neck which creates an older looking appearance. A facelift procedure is one which can result in providing a more youthful look.

Whatever type of plastic surgery you opt for, make sure you take care of the more practical considerations. That way, your recovery time is more likely to be quicker. For example, proximity of the surgery to your home is important as you don’t want to travel a great distance for aftercare. Also, try to have someone available at home to help you for the first few days, as actions such as lifting and stretching are usually restricted after experiencing such surgery.
