Just as important as finding a car that's right for you is signing a purchase or lease agreement you understand - and that means asking questions about the terms and conditions of your purchase.

"Many consumers don't realize a vehicle contract is final," says Brenda McIntyre of the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC), the industry's regulator and governing body in Ontario. "There's no cooling-off period under Ontario law when it comes to cars - what you sign for is what you get."

Ads Are Not Binding

1. Remember that ads are used by auto dealers to spark interest and get consumers into dealerships. Unlike a contract, ads are not a binding agreement between dealers and consumers.


A Contract Is Final

1. Make sure your contract includes everything you understand to be part of the deal before signing. If you are taking the car subject to certain conditions, make sure those conditions are clearly stated in writing on the front of the contract.

2. Take the time to read it carefully - it's both your right and your responsibility. If you don't understand something in the contract, ask the dealer for clarification. You can also try to negotiate terms that are better suited for you and ask for amendments to the contract.

3. Your dealer will give you the opportunity to review your contract. Before you sign, make sure any revisions you request have been included and that other conditions have not been removed.
