What kids pick up at recess

(NC)-What kids learn between classroom hours can stay with them for a lifetime. Too often, the out of class habits they pick up are negative. Instead, help your children learn some valuable lessons about generosity, kindness and sharing outside of the classroom. Here are some ideas:

Make use of the lunch hour: Teachers know how much trouble bored kids can get into at lunch or recess. Talk to your kids about making use of their lunch hour by doing something helpful. What about organizing a book or bake sale to benefit a charity?

Encourage them to set an example: Find a cause your child will be passionate about. Christian Children's Fund of Canada offers meaningful information about issues affecting children living in poverty. Having kids set up an information booth and posters about issues affecting their fellow children is a great way to get them thinking about how they can make a difference.

Supplement formal learning: For older students, some school boards require volunteer hours, and more and more universities are looking at fundraising activities on entry applications. Encourage your child to take a leadership role by organizing a school fundraiser to bring attention to a cause they support, like fighting child poverty. Websites like www.ccfcanada.ca offer a step-by-step guide to help organize fundraisers.
